The respondent should keep in mind that they are required to indicate how they have been feeling for the past one week. The questions in the inventory are written in phrases which are in conversational language, making them easy to read and understand.

A few examples of the questions that are cited in the inventory:

Respondents are given four choices to pick their answer from. They can tick or put an \”x\” in the space provided, and the answers chosen have the corresponding rating number. For example, the choices for question 1 may be:

The answers to choose from are also in easy language that most individuals can relate to, which makes the inventory even better for evaluating the respondents. There are some disagreements concerning the questions in the inventory according to some observers. The selected answers are added up to give a total score, which is then interpreted to show the level of anxiety for the respondent.

The first argument is that the listed questions are too generic to encompass the diversity of each individual who takes the Beck inventory. They contend that the minds and personalities of human beings are far too complex and that the inventory questions don\’t address many of these elements. An exemplary example: The root cause of anxiety is often due to one\’s attachment to labels and titles, and the inventory doesn\’t cover this aspect.

The second criticism of the inventory questions is that they fail to consider the mentality of the respondents. Instead, the questions dwell too much on the symptoms of their anxieties. This causes the evaluation to be one sided as it doesn\’t encompass the entire human psyche. To improve the inventory, the critics suggest the addition of questions that require the respondent to reflect on his life. This will allow the evaluators to determine the real cause of the anxiety.

Yet another argument is that the questions in the inventory do not lead to solutions to the anxiety problems for the respondents. They simply identify and categorize the anxiety levels and leave the respondent to find their own solutions. This shows the limitations of the inventory.

On the other hand, the inventory serves as a good starting point for sufferers of anxiety to identify their problems and be aware of their mental and emotional status. The Beck anxiety inventory questions can be used as a means to more research in the field of anxiety testing, diagnosis and treatment of anxiety symptoms.
